Vegan Tours Malaysia

100% Plant-Based.

Malaysia's Indian and Chinese Buddhist communities have kept plant-based cooking alive here for generations. The complication: dishes labelled 'vegetable' often get a splash of fish sauce or shrimp paste for depth. We know which stalls cook without any of that, and where the flavour comes from chillies, tamarind, and forty years of technique.

Where Animal Products Hide

Malaysian flavour often comes from three things vegans need to watch: belacan (shrimp paste), ikan bilis (dried anchovies), and fish sauce. They appear as background seasoning in dishes that look and read as vegetable-based — vegetable curries, stir-fried greens, even some rice dishes.

Chinese Buddhist vegetarian restaurants are the safest option in Malaysia — they've been cooking without meat, fish, or eggs since the early 1900s and use no animal products whatsoever. We know the ones that have been at it long enough to trust completely.

How We Handle It

Vegan stops on our tours are either dedicated Chinese Buddhist vegetarian restaurants or Indian vegetarian stalls where the stallholder has confirmed to us that no fish sauce or shrimp paste goes into their cooking. We don't guess. We've eaten at these places enough times to know.

You'll eat dishes like pure vegetable thosai, Buddhist mock-meat dishes cooked with fermented tofu and mushrooms, and claypot tofu cooked in soy and chilli with no fish stock. Real food, real flavour.

Practical Tips

Key phrase: "Saya vegan, tiada telur, tiada susu, tiada ikan" (I'm vegan, no eggs, no dairy, no fish) covers the main bases. Chinese Buddhist restaurants often mark dishes with a small leaf symbol.

Easiest areas for vegans: Brickfields (Little India) in KL and the Mahamariamman Temple area in George Town both have dense clusters of vegetarian Indian stalls where vegan eating is completely natural.

We put together a draft itinerary based on what we know — vendors, timing, neighbourhoods — and share it with you. You push back, we adjust.
