What Makes This Tour Different

Not Your Typical Tourist Route

Most Tourists

  • Eat at the same 5 stalls on Jalan Alor
  • Never meet the people behind the food
  • Leave without understanding the cultural stories
  • Follow a guidebook, not a local

With Simply Enak

  • Visit family-run stalls we've known for 14+ years
  • Meet Aunty Lim, Master Chen, Chef Raj — not just their food
  • Learn why char kway teow became political in the 1960s
  • Walk with guides who grew up eating at these stalls

We've been eating in these neighborhoods for 14+ years. Every vendor on this tour is someone we actually know — not a business arrangement, but a friendship. You'll taste the same dishes our families have been eating for generations, and hear the stories that make them matter.

On the Tour

Our guide stops the group at an outdoor market to explain what's in season right now — everyone leans in.
Guests tasting something at the pasar tani — the exact moment when street food stops being food and becomes a story.
Our guide tears off roti canai to show a guest exactly how it's done at the mamak — curry dhal front and centre, orange juice on the side.
Beef rendang up close — the meat slow-cooked until the coconut milk caramelises and every spice finds its place.
Guests at the night market stall, trying something new — this scene has played out on our tours since 2011.

Common Questions

Questions We Often Hear

What can I expect on a food tour?

You'll visit 8-10 food stalls over 4-5 hours, tasting a variety of dishes. Your guide will share stories about the food, culture, and history. Small groups (max 9 people), local prices, no tourist traps.

Can I take photos during the tour?

Absolutely! We encourage photos. Most vendors are happy to be photographed — they're proud of their food. We'll also take group photos and can help you capture the perfect shot.

How much walking is involved?

Approximately 3km over 4-5 hours, at a leisurely pace. We stop frequently to eat and listen to stories. If you have mobility concerns, let us know — we can adjust the route.

What happens if it rains?

Tours run rain or shine! Malaysia's rain is intense but brief (usually 15-20 minutes). We have covered areas at most stops and will adjust the route if needed. Bring a light rain jacket just in case.

When will I receive confirmation?

We typically confirm within 3 hours during business hours (9am-8pm). For last-minute bookings (within 24 hours), we'll do our best to accommodate — just WhatsApp us directly.

What's the minimum group size for private tours?

Private tours are available for groups of 4 or more. For couples or solo travelers, join-in tours are a great option. Contact us for custom group arrangements.

I have food allergies. Is it safe?

We take allergies seriously. Let us know when booking, and we'll brief all vendors. However, hawker stalls handle multiple ingredients, so we can't guarantee 100% allergen-free. Those with severe allergies should consult us first.

Is the food spicy?

Malaysian food can be spicy, but we adjust for your group. Most dishes have complex flavors beyond just heat. Let us know your spice tolerance, and we'll guide you accordingly.

Are there toilet breaks during the tour?

Yes! We start near a toilet facility and have breaks at locations with clean restrooms. We recommend using the toilet before the tour starts, but we'll ensure opportunities during the 4-5 hours.

Is there parking near the meeting point?

Yes, there's parking near all our meeting points. We'll send you detailed directions with parking information after booking. In KL and Penang, Grab (ride-sharing) is also very convenient and affordable.
