The People
The stalls we visit are run by people we've known for over a decade. Aunty Fatimah has been making roti jala in the same spot for 40 years. Uncle Kim's char kway teow recipe came from his father. These aren't hired vendors — they're the reason we started the tours.
The Stories
Why is Penang laksa sour and KL's sweet? What's the story behind the Hainanese coffee shops on every corner? And how did a family dispute over a noodle recipe become a national dish? We grew up with these stories — and we share them over the table, not from a script.
The Location
We don't go to the restaurants with air conditioning and picture menus. We take you to the stall down a staircase in Chow Kit market, the noodle shop that doesn't have a sign, and the curry house where the menu is written on a whiteboard in Malay. This is where we eat on our days off.

Can this tour be run as a vegetarian option?
Yes! We can adapt this tour for vegetarian diets. However, in a standard join-in tour not every meat dish can be replaced with a vegetarian alternative. Some stops are set-menu or specialised stalls where the recipe is fixed. For a fully vegetarian or vegan experience — where every single dish is plant-based — we recommend booking a private tour (/tours/private-tours). That way we can build the entire route around your dietary needs, from street food to sit-down meals.
Can you handle dietary restrictions on a private tour?
That's one of the main reasons people go private. On a join-in tour we work around what's available, but on a private tour we can build the entire route around your needs. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal — we've done it all. Just let us know when you book.
How far in advance should we book a private tour?
A week ahead is comfortable, two is better. We've pulled tours together in 48 hours before, but the best routes take time to plan. For large groups or specific dietary needs, the earlier the better.
Can we change the itinerary on a private tour?
Once you book, your guide will reach out before the day to discuss preferences. Want more seafood? Less walking? A specific neighbourhood? It's your tour — we adjust.
What happens if it rains?
We tour rain or shine — many of our best food discoveries are under covered walkways and indoor markets. In rare cases of extreme weather we'll reschedule or refund.
Do we get to meet the vendors?
That's the whole point. We take you to family-run stalls where the owner will shake your hand, show you their technique, and share the story behind their recipe. It's not a restaurant visit — it's a visit to someone's life's work.
Can children join the tour?
Yes — kids 4 and below join free on this tour. Our guides know how to keep them engaged with a gentle walking pace and plenty of seating stops. Let us know ages when booking so we can prepare.
