Notre croyance

Co-fondateur, Simply Enak

Our Philosophy

Aunty Lim — a heritage vendor who has cooked the same recipes for decades

A heritage street in Georgetown, Penang

Our Values

What We Believe

For 14+ years, we've been guided by principles that honor our vendors, their traditions, and the neighborhoods we call home.

🥥

Nothing Goes to Waste

We believe in ordering exactly what we'll eat. We believe in vendors who prep fresh daily and sell out.

Aunty Lim teaches us:
"In my mother's village, nothing was thrown. Banana leaves for wrapping. Pandan for flavor. Even the ash from coconut husks was used for cleaning."

Vendors Set Their Own Prices

We believe Aunty Lim knows what her laksa is worth. We believe in paying immediately, in cash, at the stall.

Aunty Lim teaches us:
"You don't negotiate my prices. You pay immediately, in cash, at my stall. You bring small groups who ask questions. That matters."

Recipes Shouldn't Disappear

We believe Aunty Rose's kuih recipe — brought from Fujian in 1920 — shouldn't die with her.

Aunty Rose teaches us:
"My grandmother brought these recipes from Fujian. When I stop cooking, they disappear. That's why I let them record everything."

Tourism Should Help, Not Hurt

We believe Uncle Tan's stall should thrive, not become a tourist trap.

Uncle Tan teaches us:
"Tour guests ask about my life, not just my food. They remember my name. They come back. That makes me want to keep cooking."

Eat Like a Local, Not a Tourist

We believe in ingredients sourced within 5km. We believe in walking, not buses.

Pak Hassan teaches us:
"My father bought from this market. I buy from this market. My son will buy from this market. That's how Malaysian food works."

FAQ

Questions We Often Hear

What makes Simply Enak different from other food tours?

We're locals who grew up eating at these places. You'll meet Aunty Lim who's made laksa since 1982, visit family-run stalls where we've eaten for generations, and hear stories behind every dish. Come as a guest, leave as friends.

Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Absolutely! We can accommodate vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, and other dietary needs. Just let us know when booking and we'll make sure you get Malaysian food that meets your requirements while still sharing the cultural stories.

How long are your heritage food tours?

Our cultural food tours range from 4–5 hours, including walking through neighborhoods where we grew up and meeting vendors we've known for years. We pace ourselves based on your group's interests and energy levels.

Are the tours suitable for children?

We love sharing Malaysian food heritage with families! Children get to try new flavors while learning about different cultures. We can adjust portions, spice levels, and walking pace to make it enjoyable for everyone.

What areas of Malaysia do you cover?

We currently run tours in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Melaka. KL is where we take you into working hawker centres. Penang is where we walk the Peranakan shophouse streets. Melaka is where the Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese food traditions sit side by side.

How many people join each tour?

Small groups ensure meaningful cultural connections. Maximum 9 people per tour, so you can actually talk with vendors, ask questions, and enjoy the food without feeling rushed. We want you to feel like you're walking around with friends, not following a guide.
